Granny Escapes Jail For Killing Granddaughter

A 65-YEAR-OLD Gokwe woman, who fatally hit her eight-year-old granddaughter's head against the wall, accusing her of feasting on groundnuts reserved for seed, escaped with a non-custodial sentence on Wednesday after High Court judge Justice Martin Makonese slapped her with a wholly suspended four-year sentence.

Gladys Mutopa of Matavire village under Chief Chireya in Gokwe North had pleaded guilty to culpable homicide, but Justice Makonese spared her a jail sentence, saying she had shown contrition during trial.

Prosecutor, Mirirai Shumba told the court that on November 30, 2008, Mutopa left home to fetch water, leaving behind the deceased and her siblings.

When she returned home, she was livid on discovering that her granddaughter had eaten her groundnut seed.

In a fit of rage, Mutopa confronted the girl and slapped her once on the face before hitting her head against the kitchen wall several times until she became unconscious and died a few hours later.

A report was made to the police, leading to Mutopa's arrest.
