Workers remove Trump’s name from three New York City apartment buildings after residents petition

Donald Trump has left the building.

Work crews began removing the President-elect’s name from three New York City apartment buildings where residents complained about the billionaire’s brand.

The election didn’t go their way, but tenants in the Trump Place buildings along Riverside Drive still managed to vote Trump out, gathering 600 names on a “Dump the Trump name” petition saying that the new leader of the free world had to take a walk.

On Tuesday, a week after Trump’s political upset, Equity Residential, which owns the buildings, gave in, informing tenants in an email that they would begin removing the gold TRUMP PLACE letters from each entrance, at 140, 160 and 180 Riverside Drive, and replace them with street addresses.

Residents demanded the change even before Trump’s victory as concerns grew over his divisive rhetoric about Mexicans, Muslims and women.

The petition, launched in October, cited Trump’s “appalling treatment of women, his history of racism, his attacks on immigrants, his mockery of the disabled, his tax avoidance [and] his outright lying”

Trump developed the apartment buildings in the 1990s, and they are among seven buildings in Manhattan that bear Trump’s name. While some are managed by the Trump Organization, the three Riverside Drive apartment buildings are now controlled by Equity Residential.

“We are assuming a more neutral building identity that will appeal to all current and future residents,” the Chicago-based company said.

But not all the residents are eager to see the signs go.

Todd Shapiro, professional who owns several apartments in Trump-branded apartment buildings, said his neighbors are giving up a lot.

“Over my 20 years of living in a Trump branded building, I can personally attest that real estate values are consistently higher than any of my non-Trump neighbors because of Trump’s name,” said Shapiro. “The name sticks out. Donald Trump knows marketing.”
